How Often Should Baby Have a Bath?
Just like encountering many new things in our daily lives, the first few experiences of bathing your delicate baby may be really difficult, stressful and fearsome. But with a little practice, you'll get used to handling a slippery baby. Never look onto it as a chore but rather an opportunity to bond with your child. Bath time can really be one of the most enjoyable moments of the day for you and your baby. There's nothing quite as special as holding your baby's tiny little body in the bath, and most babies come to love splashing in the tub.
How often do I need to bath my baby?
Every pediatrician has his own thoughts on this matter.
For the first and second weeks of life, newborns don't need an actual bath. Just as I said, pediatricians mostly recommend sponge bath. Although more experts have been saying that bathing your baby in a tub of water right from the start is perfectly acceptable, the key is to watch the umbilical cord and circumcision for any signs of swelling, redness or discharge. As long as you're cleaning you baby's bottom with each diaper change and washing his face and hands several times a day, bathing him two to three times a week is enough. Use gentle soap only every few days and use plain water in between so that you don't dry out your baby's delicate skin.
For babies four months above, of course, he'll need a bath after a particularly messy day. Some also enjoy a nightly bath as part of the bedtime ritual. Just be sure to keep the room warm.
Kinds of Bath
Sponge Bath
The bath commonly recommended by health professionals until the baby's umbilical cord has fallen off and until circumcision has healed. This is a great way to start out and perfect for newborns. It can lessen your anxiety of holding a slippery baby and can be a perfect practice transition to giving full bath to your baby. This is also good for babies who don't get dirty often.
Full Bath or Baby Tub Bath
This is usually recommended for babies two months and up as long as the cord has fallen off. It may be the easiest when you bath together. But if you're not, some tubs have an angled back so that you baby can lie comfortably in the tub with his head high above the water level. You might also consider buying a baby tub that has a drainage plug for easy emptying.
Best Time to Take a Bath
Pediatricians usually recommend 9 AM - 12 NN. These are the times that your baby is alert and is a preferable time for bonding. Always give baby a bath an hour after feeding to prevent reflux.
Safe Tips While Bathing a Baby
Never ever leave your baby alone! This can be a cause of drowning!
Fact: Babies have diving reflex. This is an automatic response that prevents them from breathing in water. The chances of any harm coming to your baby when it goes under the water for a few seconds are nearly zero. This reflex fades after the baby's first year but it is NOT an excuse to be anything but vigilant with your baby in the tub.
Gather all the supplies you need before everything else. Have them within arm's reach, especially the towel.
Babies lose body heat quickly. So make sure the room is warm.
If you use a sink, take care that your baby doesn't bump against the taps or burn herself on the hot tap.
Tip: If you don't have a water thermometer, you can use your elbows to feel if the water is safe to pour on.

Will a Steam Cleaner Work As Well As it Does on TV?
Have you seen the infomercials where a steam cleaner cleans everything including the toilets, stove and oven, windows and toys? You may have had the impulse to call up and buy one of these steam cleaners to help you to clean up your home. You are impressed by the flashy demonstration showing you how every mess is easily cleaned up.
Before you called the toll-free number, a small alarm went off in your head causing you to do a bit of research before plunking down the first of four easy payments of $29.95. So, do those steam cleaners really work? Are they worth it?
The only thing that a steamer is going to do is make steam. Sure, by spending over a hundred dollars on one of these machines you are going to be able to turn the steam on and off and feed it through special attachments, but at the end of the day it is just boiled water coming out of a hose.
Here are some of the claims that you may have heard on the infomercial, and whether or not they are true.
The steamer can clean windows without any streaks. This claim is going to be true if you are good at cleaning windows. Plus, it isn't going to be as easy as it looks on TV, because if your windows are anything like mine, they are really dirty. Add water to the mix and you are going to be spreading around mud.
This steamer is going to cut through layers of grease and fat on your stove. You are going to be out of luck, because your steamer is not going to be able to do this. Why? Because you are going to need more than just hot steam to clean this mess. To test this out, leave a pot of boiling water on your stove and see if it makes cleaning your stove any easier.
A steamer can clean hard water stains and grime from your shower door. Sorry, it isn't going to be able to do this either. To clean hard water deposits, try white vinegar. Grime is best cleaned with a bathroom cleaner. Sure, you could do it with steam, but it is going to take a long time and be a bigger pain to do.
A steamer will sanitize hard surfaces. This claim is true if the steam is allowed to go over the entire surface for long enough time. Just holding a toy over the spray of steam for a second is not going to do anything to kill bacteria or germs.
The bottom line, a steamer is a fun toy to have, but once you use it a couple of times, you are going to find that it isn't that great to have. In the time it takes to heat up the steamer, you could have probably cleaned what you needed to clean.
Do you have a steamer? Was it worth it or is it just cluttering up your closet?

Benefits of Photochromic Sunglasses & Goggles
Although photochromic lenses are more commonly referred to as transitional lenses today, the correct term is photochromic or photochromatic. Photochromic sunglasses are commonly referred to as transitional sunglasses because of their transition from dark when outdoors to light when indoors. The definition of photochromic is capable of changing color on exposure to radiant energy and of, relating to, or utilizing the change of color shown by a photochromic substance. You may ask yourself, "How does this happen?".
Photochromic lenses have many molecules embedded in them. These molecules are transparent to visible light when in the absence of UV light, so the lenses will be light. When in the presence of UV rays, the molecules react and change shape. When this happens the molecules absorb some of the visible light causing the lens to darken. The brighter the sunlight the darker the lens.
Photochromic lenses are great for those that wear eyeglasses, who can not wear sunglasses unless they are prescription. If you wear eyeglasses and wear sunglasses when outside, you are forced to carry two pair of eyewear. For most people this is a hassle. You either break the pair you are carrying or lose them. If you choose to wear photochromics, you can wear them for eyeglasses and sunglasses. You simply buy the photochromic sunglasses, be sure they are Rx ready and take them to your local eye doctor.
Photochromic sunglasses are great for motorcycle riding sunglasses as well. So many motorcyclists are forced to carry two or even three pairs of sunglasses or goggles or interchangeable lens kits with clear, charcoal and amber color lenses. With photochromic lenses you can buy and carry just one pair of sunglasses or goggles for all day and even night riding. With photochromic lenses you do not have to pull off the side of the interstate endangering your life and maybe others to change your sunglasses or goggles. You can ride from morning to night without ever having to change your eyewear.
When purchasing photochromic lenses be aware of the money you are spending. If you buy cheap photochromic sunglasses or goggles the lenses tend to change at a much slower pace and usually do not get dark enough. They tend to darken to a grey/smoke instead of the darker charcoal lens. Some people prefer this, but in our experience most people want the lenses to change quickly and to have the charcoal lens when outdoors instead of the lighter grey lens. A lot of this will depend on how sensitive your eyes are to the sunlight. If you notice that you squint a lot when outdoors, your eyes are more sensitive to light which means you should spend the extra dollar and get a nice pair of photochromics sunglasses or goggles. You'll be happy you did.
